If you haven’t seen Timothée Chalamet’s blonde hair by now (you’re probably employed), then you’re likely extra confused as to what this new look means and asking yourself, “Timmy, why?”
The actor took method acting to the next level by channeling a very specific Bob Dylan look for the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown — the biopic starring Chalamet as Dylan. It’s clear that Chalamet did his research and found a pretty niche Dylan look for this recent red carpet appearance, as he showed up wearing a blue beanie, goatee, and most shocking of all — blonde hair.
Attending the New York premiere on Friday, December 13, Chalamet stayed serious and in character as he walked alongside his costars Elle Fanning, Will Harrison, Monica Barbaro, and more.
If you’re seeing this look and thinking early 2000s, you’d be very correct. The beanie. The swoopy MySpace-style hair. The leather jacket. The scarf. It’s practically screaming early-aughts. The reference that Chalamet was making was from a rare Bob Dylan red carpet appearance in 2003, when he attended the Sundance Film Festival promoting the movie he co-wrote, Masked and Anonymous.
Chalamet’s impression of the legendary musician on the red carpet was perfect in every way; from his serious demeanor, to the way the scarf laid on his jacket. He took a page out of Zendaya’s book — who channeled Cher in a vintage Bob Mackie dress while introducing the musician at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Timothée Chalamet’s dedication to the role clearly goes beyond just in the film, and he’s opened up about how deep he’s gotten into character. In a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Chalamet revealed that he learned to play 30 Bob Dylan songs in preparation. He also worked with a dialect coach “for years” after he landed the starring role. Chalamet also said he channeled Dylan by physically going to the places the musician began: “For my own spirit-gathering, for lack of a better metaphor, I retraced Bob’s steps through Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin. And I started in Hibbing, in Duluth. And I spent about a week where he is from in Minnesota.”
