A new “Star Wars” film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling has been given a title and will open in theaters on May 28, 2027, it was announced Thursday as part of “Star Wars” Celebration in Japan.
The film is called “Star Wars: Starfighter,” and it is a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” according to the announcement from Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni and President Kathleen Kennedy. It will feature all new characters and explore a new period of time yet to be explored on screen. Still in the works is another film that will reportedly bring Daisy Ridley’s Rey back onto the screen and be a follow-up chapter to the Skywalker Saga.
Production on “Star Wars: Starfighter” is set to begin this fall.
As previously reported, Jonathan Tropper is writing the script for “Starfighter,” reuniting with Levy and his 21 Laps production banner after working together on “This Is Where I Leave You” and “The Adam Project.”
Levy most recently directed “Deadpool & Wolverine” and is a director and producer on “Stranger Things.”
Gosling most recently starred in the 2024 blockbuster “Barbie,” and he’ll next be seen in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s sci-fi “Project Hail Mary.” His other credits include “La La Land,” “The Notebook,” and “Crazy Stupid Love.”
On Wednesday, a report broke via The InSneider that “Anora” Oscar winner Mikey Madison was being eyed for a role opposite Gosling in the film, but Variety later reported that Madison had passed on the role. No other cast was announced during “Star Wars” Celebration.
Gosling was first reported to be in talks to join the “Star Wars” universe back in January, though Levy’s film has been in development since 2022. The film’s title also evokes the canceled “Rogue Squadron” that Patty Jenkins was at one point meant to direct, but it’s unclear if the two projects bear any similarities.
The next “Star Wars” feature on the horizon, the first since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” would be “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the spinoff of the Disney+ series starring Pedro Pascal. Other projects in development include films from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Simon Kinberg, Taika Waititi, and Dave Filoni all in development.
